❶I plan to take another of your e-mail class, either the 8-week descriptive or the new poetry class. The best way to evoke these feelings in your readers is to connect your emotions, as the protagonist, with pivotal events happening throughout your narrative arc.

What point do you want to get across? Which of your memories are most relevant to this? An outline will help you write more efficiently and will ensure you actually make your point, rather than get lost in ramblings. Once you know what point you want to share, sit down and write a list of events in your life that pertain to it. Choose one or a series of these memories and events to cover in your book.

Some memoirs cover an entire childhood. Others cover a single journey or event. The choice is yours. Take a look over a memoir example or two so you have a better idea of what it entails. Remember that a memoir is not an autobiography. Create a Memoir Outline.

Having a basic memoir outline to work from will help you stay on track. Decide how you plan to structure your book and then go from there. A student memoir outline can serve as an example to get you started, or you can use one of our templates. For some people, using a memoir graphic organizer helps organize those elusive memories. For the sake of the article, stick to a specific focus and pare your recollections down to fit that focus.

It was of good value to me as it got me started thinking more deeply about my characters. I don't have a lot of time to write, working two jobs, but I am doing the ten-minute exercise with each lesson, and each evening, trying to get in the habit of sitting myself down to write I would recommend the course to anyone.

Listen to the song if you don't have a recording, you can probably find it on Youtube. Spend a few minutes inside that memory, reliving it in as much detail as possible.

Then write about that memory, trying to recreate it on the page. Show the scene where the conversation happened, and try to reconstruct parts of the dialogue word-for-word on the page so that readers can "hear" it first-hand. What memories does it bring back?

Focus on one of the memories, trying to recall sounds, smells, and other sensations, as well as what things looked like. But more importantly, you will share your own authentic story with the world. This post contains affiliate links.

I suggest looking at story structure first. The Story Grid is a great way to delve into structure as well as editing.

A suggestion not here on the list: Frame your story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Start with dramatizing the inciting incident of the story, what kicks off the story in a big way, the punch to the gut.

Complicate the story progressive problems. The challenges get bigger and bigger as the story goes on. Give the story a turning point in which the protagonist you have to make a big decision for which there is no turning back. Have the protagonist answer the question in action. And then show the consequences of that decision as the resolution of the story. I knew I should go that route.

Now I have to start over again with much excitement! This will be my first memoir. I would love to have any more tips anyone is willing to share. This is something I want to do and feel I need to do. Yes, go for the sliver method. I started working with a memoir writer today and once we narrowed the focus to overarching theme, it was much easier to find the slivers that fit that theme. Her children approached me to do this, but she is excited about it and looking forward to seeing the book.

I guess it will be more of a biography than a memoir, but I want to include stories written as scenes, with details to keep it interesting.

As yourself, what do I want my readers to walk away knowing when they close the book? That is the theme, and then pick the bits and pieces that fit to that theme.
